Commissioned by award-winning saxophonist, Gillian Blair, 'Amongst The Cinders' for soprano saxophone will be premiered at EurSax 2017 in Porto, Portugal with pianist, David Gibson on the 12th July.
The piece is a short work that seeks to create a dense, heavy and haunting atmosphere to echo the aftermath of a burnt-out fire. The piece builds into moments of ignition to reflect the cinders that no longer produce flames but still contain combustible matter within them. Therefore, throughout the piece, AMONGST THE CINDERS merges instances of eruption and stability, sparks and cinders.
